How do you make your make your decisions regarding casting for the children's shows?

Casting for a Fantasy Works Youth Theater Show – Children’s Productions

We call it casting – not auditioning because all the students who register receive parts.

1. Casting policy: Each show is cast individually on the strength of each student’s performances on casting day and the requirements of the show. A student new to our program has the same opportunity of being cast in a lead role as students who have performed with us a long period of time. All students are cast in at least 4 numbers.

2. Directors determine the “look” of a show. A director casts a show so that the story can be told to the audience in a believable way. The entire ensemble must look right together.

3. Rotating Stations: We divide our casts by age on the first day of one of our programs. Each age group rotates through these stations:

• A Singing Station – snippets of songs are taught from the show. Students may volunteer to sing alone or in a small group with friends. The voice range of a student is a huge consideration when casting a musical. Familiarity with the songs in the show is helpful.
• A Movement Station – a combination of steps is taught. Students are rated Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. We include dances from all ability ranges in our shows.
• An Acting Station – readings from the script help us see students as different characters. I suggest that you read as much as possible for many different parts.
• An Interview Station – we determine special skills and interests of the students and are sometimes able to incorporate these skills into a show. For example, if we have several students with gymnastics training, we might create a number for these students. If we have a student who plays guitar, we might find a spot for that talent in a number.

4. Casting announcements: The director determines how casting announcements will be made, by phone, by email, or by announcement on the first day of the program.

Remember we are an ensemble group where respect, responsibility, and collaboration are the values that guide us. Everyone contributes to the success of the production. We ask that you support the casting decisions of the directors and do your personal best in whatever roles you receive.
